I consider the TM Warthog to be a great middle ground between the high end HOTAS' (the likes of Virpil) and the more affordable HOTAS' (like the likes of the X56, X52 and T.16000).
It you play games like DCS World or Falcon BMS this HOTAS is brilliant simply because you can match the button layout very close to how it would be in the real aircraft (or in the case of the A-10, exactly the same).
If you mainly play space games like Elite Dangerous or Star Citizen I would recommend the X56 over the Warthog because the X56 has more buttons, a twist stick, and more thumbsticks for transnational movement and camera control. Though the Warthog is still a solid choice.
As for the short comings and some mods to overcome them: The TDC nipple on the throttle is horrid, get either the joystick mod or force sensor mod, it's absolutely worth the price and it's shocking Thrust Master hasn't addressed this. Pulling the throttle up to pass the afterburner indent is awkward. Carefully file down the the afterburner insert. Watch a video on it, take little bits off at a time and test it before you take more off; you only have one shot at it.
The build quality could be better. I have a temperamental button on my throttle, the stick now has a bit of play in it, the stick now clunks though its range of motion and it only has a 12-month warranty + Aussie consumer protections.
